"Historic Tolbooth Tavern"
Looking across a damp street in Old Edinburgh toward the Historic Tolbooth Tavern.
This tavern, located on Edinburgh’s Royal Mile, is in a medieval building that originally served as a Tolbooth, being used to collect tolls from travellers entering the burgh at the Canongate (therefore named the Canongate Tolbooth). The building was built in 1591 and has also served as a Council Chamber, Police Court, and Prison. The ground floor officially became a tavern in 1820.
This is also available as a canvas print here.
